Pictured here is the Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace), the town hall of Florence.Founded in 80 B.C.Lucius Cornelius Sulla as a settlement for his soldiers, it was named Fluentia, which later became Firenze.
Renown artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli and Donatello all lived, studied and worked in Florence, along with architects like Brunelleschi, who designed the dome of the citys duomo, Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. Florence has a colorful history as a political and financial center, dominated for over 150 years by the Medici family and is also known as a fashion center. Pictured here is the Fountain of Neptune in Piazza della Signoria, with Badia Florintina and the bell tower of Palazzo del Bargello in the background. Pictured here are the Baptistery Doors, known as The Gates of Paradise and so named by Michelangelo. Designed by Lorenzo Ghiberti, they are the east doors of tlhe Florence Baptistery, across from the Duomo. Etching after a bronze statue (c. Donatello (Italian sculptor, c. David by Donatello and the Carabinieri Emblem depicted in the old Italian 200 lira coin. In the lower part of the photo a replica of Michelangelos famous statue of David. Construction started in 1296 but was not completed until 1436 when Filippo Brunelleschi created the worlds largest brick dome.
